The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be received by individuals every first Friday of the month at the 12:10pm Mass or by private appointment with Father Richard. Call the church office immediately at 575-523-0167 if you have a loved one in imminent danger of death.
The Sacrament “Anointing of the Sick,” also referred to as “Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction,” is the anointing given to those who are gravely bodily ill, especially those in danger of death. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "The first grace of this sacrament is one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age. This grace is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who renews trust and faith in God and strengthens against the temptations of the evil one, the temptation to discouragement and anguish in the face of death. This assistance from the Lord by the power of his Spirit is meant to lead the sick person to healing of the soul, but also of the body if such is God's will. Furthermore, if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." (paragraph 1520)
When a loved one is gravely ill or in hospice care, it can be difficult knowing when it is appropriate to continue treatment and when it is morally permissible to stop treatment. The Catholic Health Association of the United States prepared a guide to help Catholics determine the best course of action for themselves or for their loved ones. It can be reviewed by clicking on the button below. You are also welcome to call the parish office at 575-523-0167 to schedule a time to speak to Father Richard.
