Holy Cross Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society
2018 Report to Parish
Mission: The Holy Cross St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is an all-volunteer Catholic lay charity that helped over 2,000 poor and needy persons in Las Cruces last year, including almost 1,000 children.
How We Help: The Holy Cross SVdP Conference has a Financial Assistance Program and Thrift Store. After a home visit from SVDP volunteers, we may offer assistance to poor households in Las Cruces, primarily to help pay their utility bills. The Assistance Program is funded through Sunday collections at Holy Cross, and also from sales at the Thrift Store.
Our Thrift Store enables us to provide clothing, furniture, and household items to the poor in our community, using a voucher system. SVdP volunteers at Holy Cross, St. Genevieve’s, and Our Lady of Health issue vouchers to people who are requesting assistance. Vouchers are redeemed at the Thrift Store.
Good-hearted people throughout the whole community, who share our concern for the poor and wish to do something to help, donate merchandise in the Thrift Store. About half of the donated merchandise is given freely to the poor through our voucher system. The remaining merchandise is sold at modest prices and the income is used to support the Financial Assistance Program (for utility bills). To learn more, pick up one of our brochures in the foyer, or read about us in the Holy Cross website, or follow us on Facebook.
Assistance Provided to the Poor in 2018:
All-Volunteer Ministry Collaboration: The Holy Cross SVdP is able to provide cost effective services because we are an all-volunteer charity. Volunteers include parishioners from Holy Cross, Our Lady of Health, Our Lady of Purification, Santa Rosa de Lima, St. Albino, St. Genevieve, and Our Lady of Guadeloupe in Tortugas. Last year, volunteers contributed over 8,500 hours of work doing Home Visits and operating the Thrift Store.
How You Can Help: Be a volunteer or donate merchandise to the Thrift Store—we need furniture, household items, and clothing. The Thrift Store is located in the Southwest Trade Center at 580 S. Valley in Las Cruces, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. Donations are accepted at the Thrift Store and free pickup is available by appointment. To schedule a pickup, contact the Thrift Store at 575-527-4041,
Grateful For YOU!! We are only able to help the poor and needy in Las Cruces because of the generous financial and material support of parishioners at Holy Cross. We are especially grateful to Father Richard Catanach, who is our Spiritual Advisor and a Friend to the Poor.
